“This is a terrific book, one that fills a large gap in the library of any serious singer or coach. The explanations of Russian pronunciation are lucid and helpful, and the translations, specifically word-for-word, are exactly what is needed by those of us who do not read Russian. This book should receive a wide welcome among musicians, and deservedly so.”

“What a treasure trove! So much of this exciting repertory has been neglected by English and American singers and their audiences, because guidance in pronunciation and translation was generally not available. Certainly, this book will go a long way toward remedying that neglect. And certainly, this book should be in the libraries of every dedicated student of singing and every teacher of singing. It offers all of us the key to the world of Russian song.”

“I am happy to recommend Jean Piatak and Regina Avrashov’s volume devoted to Russian songs and arias. It is probably the only volume available in the United States devoted to the Russian vocal literature, and thereby it fills a crying need for the American singer. The repertoire chosen for this volume is a splendid one and the literal translations provided are most practical. Having the material on Russian diction at the beginning of the volume is a practical idea and of great help to the singer. I hope that this work will find its way into the library of every singer.”

“It was with a fervent “at last” that I greeted Jean Piatak and Regina Avrashov’s new book Russian Songs and Arias. The authors have provided a detailed, thorough, clearly written analysis of Russian diction, and thus have filled a need that has long existed in the singing profession. Not content with being the definitive source for diction, however, Dr. Piatak, a singer herself, offers to her colleagues a priceless gift. This volume also contains word-by-word translations of almost 150 songs…certainly this book should be in the libraries of every dedicated student of singing and every teacher of singing. It offers all of us the key to the world of Russian song.”
